Importance of BS6 Norm for Car Owners in India

In 21st century, air pollution has been on the rise due to massive industrial toxins, emissions from vehicles, and burning up of agricultural waste in India. The condition of the air quality has deteriorated dramatically in metropolitan cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai and the like. To combat this problem, Bharat Stage Emission Standards (BSES) have been set up by the government. The first emission norm, BS1, was introduced in 2000, following which several other norms came into effect. BS4 was enforced across the country by 2017, but with rapidly increasing emissions in the environment, the government decided to enforce BS6 in 2020. 

Why is BS6 Stage 6 Norm Important? 

B6 is a norm that will significantly reduce the amount of emissions each car emits in the air. With this, the purity of the air in Indian skies is set to improve, thus reducing respiratory diseases among people, improving the condition of the ozone layer, allowing flora and fauna to flourish, etc. This would be possible because BS6 cars will emit less amount of NOx, particulate matter, NMHC (non-methane hydrocarbons) and other pollutants. Hence, the enforcement of BS6 for car manufacturing in India is a positive step for reducing air pollution in the country. 

What is the Difference between BS6 Compliant and BS6 Ready Cars? 

Since the BS6 implementation announcement was made in 2018 by the Supreme Court of India, customers across the country have been inquisitive. One of the most common queries is about the difference between BS6 compliant and BS6 ready cars. In the case of the former, cars by popular manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki BS6 compliance is possible in certain cars as their making and mechanics work that way. While in the case of the latter, BS6 ready cars are manufactured in adherence to BS6. Thus, purchasing a car in 2020 should only be done if it is BS6 ready or at least compliant.
